Madiwala lake

I want to take you on a journey of Bangalore, a city I grew up in, heading towards a water crisis and how am I affected by this whole journey.

My father tells me about how Bangalore was known as the city of lakes before it changed to the Garden city. Only recently did Bangalore get recognized as the IT capital of India. At a given point of time, there were more than 300 lakes in Bangalore. The city met its water needs from the Dharmambudi lake, where today a sprawling city bus stand exists. My father shares that like Dharmambudhii, most of the lakes have vanished due to encroachment and unchecked construction activity for the urban infrastructure expansion needs of the city’s booming population. Later on, the city’s water needs were met by the Hessarghatta lake and then followed by the Thippagondanahalli lake. …

It’s not that the crisis for water arose out of thin air like a star transforming into a UFO and emerging right out of the clear blue skies, it has been prevailing for over decades now. So, why has water conservation become a hot topic so suddenly? That’s because this invaluable resource isn’t invaluable anymore and all it seeks is the true understanding of its value. Rather than treating water, as an inexhaustible resource, it’s important for us to draw our attention towards its scarce nature and steps must be taken to extract it from its endangerment, otherwise, mankind won’t have the only liquid that ensures its survival.
How can we crown the resource with the respect it deserves?

A study shows that 54% of India already faces high to extremely high water stress and reports predict that by 2050 about 4.8 to 5.7 …

Dear friends,

I’m offering the 2-credit course on IoT and Data Science for CleanTech and AgriTech in association with Dr. Vijay Mishra (CEO -CTO Center for Nano Science and Engineering CeNSE at IISc)at the Center for Continuing Education at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore starting from August 6th (every Tuesday 6pm to 8pm). This is a certification course from the Indian Institute of Science for the working professionals running for nearly 40 years mostly offered by the full time faculty of the institute. For last three years I have been been offering courses centered around IoT, either from Industrial or the Smart City use case, which turned out to be a great experience. Considering the fact that my interest has been mostly focused on Sustainability in Water, Energy and to an extent Agriculture (as it uses a lot of water and energy), I thought why not offer the course on CleanTech and AgriTech. Since IoT alone won’t make a complete solution, we are offering the course as a package of IoT and Data Science. …

Dear Friends,

I started the course “Product Prototyping in IoT” in association with Dr. Vijay Mishra in January at Center for Continuing Education at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore with a mission to help my students build products using Internet of Things. I’m glad the students are developing very interesting product prototypes namely: Indoor Positioning System, Water Quality Monitoring, School Bus Tracking System, Cheat Buzzer for Exams, Smart Infant Warmer, Block spot and garbage detection system, Smart home automation and Indoor Security System. Today I conducted the midterm test to check the depth at which they have been able to understand the product they are planning to build from both technology and business perspective - happy to share the question paper for your reference below. …

Dear friends,

Greetings from Bangalore!

I’m writing this post to share my experience of visiting Gujarat with three of my colleagues to present FluxGen’s work at Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. I’m sure you would have heard of the event in the news and social media that it is an biennial investors summit organized by Government of Gujarat for business, trade and tourism promotion of Gujarat started by the incumbent Prime Minister of India and the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Sri Narendra Modi in the year 2003. Before I go more into the event, let me tell you that next few weeks is probably the best time to tour Gujarat considering the amazing weather conditions. …

Dear friends,

As you know, I have been offering a semester long course on Industrial Internet of Things at the Center for Continuing Education at Indian Institute of Science, for a couple of years now. I’m glad the course had full registration (40) during previous semester and the students responded to my experiments in the classroom with great enthusiasm. It was delightful to have collaborated with Dr. Pavan Tallapragada, faculty at Electrical Engineering Department, IISc, who was also my senior in Mass Spectrometer lab during my time as as student in the institute. Since this course is for students outside the institute, we mostly had working professionals from companies like Bosch, GE, ACE Manufacturing System, HP, Mindtree, etc as the course participants. Some of the students were sponsored by their respective organizations — in fact ten students were sponsored by Bosch. The course also attracted faculty from engineering colleges and other academics institutions too. Apart from my lectures, I invited eminent engineers to the class as guest speakers, which include Shivoo Koteshwar ( Site head and General Manager of MediaTek India), Prasad HB (former AVP of Infosys, director of Information Security at PESU), Shivaram KR ( Founder and CEO of Curl Analytics), Rakesh Sharma (Head of Design Thinking at Cisco India), Pradeep HS (Program manager at Adobe) and Gomathi Sankar (ex-Cisco, Founder and CEO, DAACO works — started after previous Industrial IoT course) to share their expert view on topics of relevance to the course. My colleague. Jagatheeswaran, who is a very passionate engineer at FluxGen, gave a couple of hands-on IoT workshop to the students in the class room and supported them at FluxGen Lab too. For the first time, we managed to have a Pitch day and demo day of the product prototype developed by the students as part of the course. I’m happy that nearly three fourth of the students graduated from the course and got their course completion certificates from the institute recently. …

Dear friends,

Its been eight years since I embarked on a career vision which states as “To work towards making sustainable technologies as the default choice for the world”. With the vision as the compass, me and my team at FluxGen worked on Renewable Energy Systems, rural electrification using Solar Photovoltaics, water management system for agriculture(irrigation systems) and water management system for Industries all these years. To solve our customer problem we used Internet of Things (IoT) along with data analytics to monitor and analyze systems we built. For the pioneering works we did in IoT, at least in India, we were awarded the “IoT startup of the year 2016” award at the first IoT India Congress. We did collaborative work with my Alma mater Indian Institute of Science in powering a village using solar, pilot solar power to Indian Railways and others, which helped us build our competency in sustainable technologies. …

Dear friends,

I wish you a happy Makara sankranthi/Pongal/ Lohri/Bihu to all of you! May this festival season bring happiness, prosperity and joy to you, your family and friends. I’m writing this mail to share my first day experience and my ideas for the Industrial IoT course that I’m offering at the Indian Institute of Science. Thanks for coming here to read — would be nicer if you can share your thoughts as a comment to this post or you can email me.

I was super thrilled when I got to know that all the seats got filled much before the deadline. Considering the fact the course is a hot subject and offered at IISc, I knew that there was a natural traction. When I met the students on the first class, which was last Thursday, I came to know some of them joined after reading my previous post - digital marketing does help! I’m also thankful to the previous batch of students, who recommended the course to many in their friends and family circle. Also, to my surprise the course has been able to attract about ten professionals from Robert Bosch. I later learnt that Bosch has an interesting employee benefit program, where each employee is provided with a training budget for themselves, which can be used for *ANY* training /certification needs of an employee. No manager to approve, no alignment to current work etc, completely an employee’s choice. Fortunately the courses offered by Center for Continuing Education at IISc is under the pre-approved list. In this way I have 40 students, who I could sense, are very eager to learn the nuances of Industrial IoT for this semester, which is going to end with a written exam in mid-May. …
